Here's what I see happening in our unique industry while attempting to not stir political emotions and debates: Although we work for different companies and our SUXOS probably don't really care that we have the course or not, the customer does! Who is the customer? It's the federal government!

As the owner of Training Center Pros and an active UXO SUXOS and Safety/QC, I see the trends of what's happening with the Army Corps of Engineers. Many USACE employees have taken this course telling me that those of us in the field need to be prepared for further regulations.

I also look at the 8 Hour Supervisor as making myself more employable going forward. If you have the 8 Hour HAZWOPER Supervisor and the next person doesn't, you'll have the advantage when it's hiring time.

Spend the money, take the course, increase your take home pay and keep an open eye on what the customers want. In the end, it makes you more employable.

OSHA expects a general hazardous waste site worker who will become a supervisor or manager to receive at least 16 hours of training during the year they become a supervisor. This includes 8 hours of management and supervisory training in addition to 8 hours of employee refresher training.

HAZWOPER requires supervisors and managers be given training and supervised field experience that is,at least, equivalent to the level of training their employees have received, and to have at least 8 additional hours of specialized training on the topics listed in 1910.120(e)(4). Also, workers must receive additional training, when required by OSHA standards, on the specific hazards of their job. Training Providers should be used to ensure credibility and augment a company's training program.

Therefore, in addition to the training provided by an outside party, a student should receive site-specific training that is supplied by their own company. This training should target the company's unique approach to hazard prevention, including the use of site-specific equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency procedures.

As a rule, this company-specific training should be well documented. The bottom line, in ALL SITUATIONS is employers are required to ensure their employees are adequately trained to do their job. Below are some frequently asked questions specific to this 8 Hour HAZWOPER Supervisor course.
