Marthas Vinyard UXO
Marthas Vinyard UXO found. Here's the story: After seven weeks of 5 hour dives daily, the dive team is getting a bit banged up. Conditions continue to be similar to diving in a washing machine. Not necessarily just from the diving but from the airlifting as well blasting holes in the bottom to recover ordnance. The dive team dug holes that approach 6 foot deep into the bottom. Nothing like being buried alive underwater. Weather continues to be horrible, so when we're not getting a complete beat-down from the waves the team is dealing with freezing temps, ridiculous wind, sideways rain and zero viability.
Up til now, the EOD dive team has just been recovering expended rocket motors.Today the team pulled up what is believed to be a full up live round; a 5" warhead attached to a 3.25" rocket body. The team is going to blow it in place sometime over the next couple of days. A 5" warhead is a whole bunch of explosive so it should be a decent shot. The affluent locals in their very expensive homes nearby are just going to experience some bang. Finding the ordnance has changed the whole dynamic of the job. This was totally unexpected and very much changes the scope of the work. The team will probably end up coming back here to do a full clearance job on the beach. In the meantime, this beach is closed and the vineyard is in peril of having most of their beaches closed down for summer.
