Homeland Security Jobs

Homeland Security Jobs are available if you know where to look, what degrees and certifications are best suited for you and what specifically you want to do in this fastest growing field.

At SGC Group we focus on terrorist threats including IED's here in the US and overseas. Our customers include the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, US State Department, Department of Energy, US Army Corps of Engineers, law enforcement agencies and many others.

Whether you currently have a degree or are deciding on which degree that is best for you to accomplish your goals, you should really look across the board to all agencies.

Most agencies do require a college degree but they can be substituted with relevant job experience from the military or law enforcement.

When looking at Homeland Security jobs, be sure that when you pick your degree it's something that you can transfer to the civilian sector. An example would be in how terrorists fund their activities.

An accounting degree would allow you to be on the front lines of homeland security by peeling back the inner workings of terrorist funding and Hawala, an informal banking and money laundering technique that originated in the middle east.

DHS is a great agency to work for and jobs are available in most metropolitan areas and all airports. The State Department has just as many openings but will allow you to live and work overseas which is a truly unique opportunity.

How to Make a 6 Figure Income in Homeland Security

Naturally, I always ask folks if they like to work outside and would be interested in working with explosives. Did you know there are over 3500 sites in the US that have Unexploded Ordnance, UXO, that need to be cleaned up?

Being a UXO Tech may not be for you but for the right person, it's an exciting career that pays well. The civilian schools take 200 hours or 4 weeks to complete plus the OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification and you are then certified to work on bombing ranges around the US and the world.

Being a UXO Tech falls within Homeland Security jobs, pays very well and includes your hourly rate, benefits in kind, hazard pay and Per Diem which is not taxable. This might be a great career where you can make great money, have time to complete your studies as well build an impressive resume all at the same time.

If you have 2 people looking for homeland security jobs and their resumes are identical but one has UXO Technician certification, which person is going to be hired?

Another quick solution is to use your 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification for disaster response. It is a FEMA requirement that anyone involved in oil spill remediation have the 40 Hour HAZWOPER. When the floods hit middle Tennessee in the spring of 2010, those with the HAZWOPER were the first to be called and were paid the most. Hurricane season is here and you don't have to have the TV on long to hear about wildfires, floods, earthquakes, etc.

Regardless of what agency you go to work for, all government agencies have a way the chain of command works including incidents where multiple federal, state, county and city organizations must communicate effectively.

FEMA offers two sets of complete training for free. The courses are NIMS, National Incident Management System and ICS, Incident Command System. These courses are very good and will give you an advantage knowing how inter-agency protocols work.

Ultimately, it's up to you to decide specifically what you would like to do and then put your plan of action into motion. If you would like run your ideas by us here at SGC Group, use the ''Contact Us'' page linked to your left.

Other Homeland Security jobs that may be of interest are:

Private Investigator

Commercial Diver

EMT, Paramedic or Red Cross Instructor

Executive Protection Professional

HAZMAT Responder

Why do I recommend the above for everyone looking at Homeland Security jobs? I am active in all of the above.

To see how you can be Globally Employable click on the link to the right. I'll show you how to make a 6 Figure Income in just a couple of months.

I am a licensed PI and conduct interviews and conduct surveillance for attorneys. I do conduct underwater UXO jobs and maintain my dive quals. I am a certified Red Cross Instructor which is a great qualification to have. I've worked on people to include my next door neighbor to villagers with knife wounds in Papua New Guinea.

In November of 2009 I was on an Executive Protection detail to protect Don Shula, Bob Griese, Mario Andretti, Mark Messier and Lee Trevino at the Bellaggio in Las Vegas. The next month I was protecting Alan Jackson in downtown Nashville.

With HAZMAT responses, I limit myself to consulting with an occasional response to the Gulf of Mexico.

The bottom line is if you want to work with DHS by getting a degree (which is great), please keep in mind you're competing with your classmates and others with real-world knowledge and experience.

If you choose this route, knowing the degree takes time, get some additional qualifications so you can earn while you learn.

My recommended order is:

The NIMS course by FEMA. It's FREE!

The 40 Hour HAZWOPER. For $350 and some time online, you're ready for natural disasters and it's a prerequisite for UXO and HAZMAT. Everyone taking a HAZWOPER course through SGC Group will receive the the Globally Employable challenge coin!

First Responder Awareness

First Responder Operations

Handgun Carry Permit - This varies state-to-state.

The above are a good base to operate from that will make your resume standout and also give you the opportunity to make some money.

When you have these done, we do offer more courses including Terrorist Predictive Profiling and Demystifying Terrorism.
