So, we being the deep sea explorers that we were in Sig would occasionally requal the dive in the deep end of the pool on base. After an arduous day of bending dives we would set out a lunch of pizza from the club next door, and then be quickly joined by Eddie.
For those that didn't know Eddie, he was quite the womanizer and had a collection of regular gals he would dote on. Eddie came over after ensuring the dive station was straight and took his slice of pizza... thing was, he returned within a couple minutes to beg another. We followed him as he promptly took the second slice, to see if he was simply stashing them. No, what we found was a pretty female mutt that he (we) had provided lunch for. Quite the gentleman, serving her and then himself!
I was sad when we lost Eddie, he was never far and always happy, never seeing his loss of a leg as a negative. He had his uniforms and personnel record and in that, one or two counseling and AWOL entries. We came to identify with him as he with us, a simple arrangement and good for us all.
Eddie, a proper USN EOD dog as there ever could be.
(I wish I had the photos of him)
